Practical Nursing Program

  • The Practical Nursing Program:

    • prepares students to perform select nursing duties in care of the sick, promotion of health, and prevention of illness under the supervision of a licensed physician and of a registered nurse.
    • is sponsored by the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County (CTCLC).
    • is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). 
    • prepares and provides eligibility to graduates to take the Pennsylvania State Board licensing examination for Practical Nursing.
    • was established in 1967 under the Manpower Development Training Act and was approved by the Veterans Administration in 1968.

    • Students may be eligible for Financial Aid through PELL and SEOG grants, federal loans, scholarships and/or Veterans benefits. 

    Admission Requirements

    The course is open to any interested person who:

    • is a resident of Pennsylvania
    • is a high school graduate with a diploma and official high school transcript(s) from an accredited school or has a Pennsylvania G.E.D. Out of state G.E.D results and foreign language transcripts must be approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education at the applicant's expense.
    • manifests ability to learn as indicated by a pre-admission test, two satisfactory references and official transcripts
    • satisfactory results of information session
    • Admission Committee review

    In addition, once accepted, participation in program is contngent on the receipt of the following:

    • Act 34 Child Abuse, Act 151 State Police and FBI clearances (3) that are free from prohibitive offenses and are accepted by the governing institution and clinical sites.
    • Proof of good physical and mental health as evidenced by a physical exam, including completed immunizations, negative 10 panel drug screening, and physician verification of ability to perform essential functions.

    Program of Study

       The Practical Nursing Program is a 52-week course of study extended over 15 months, on a 5 day a week basis (Monday-Friday). Appx. 50% of the time is spent the classroom and 50% in the clinical experience. Supervised, concurrent and sequential clinical experience is given at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Mountain View Care Center, Aveanna Daycare for Medically Fragile Children, Wayne Memorial Hospital, Allied Services and Headstart Centers. Students are under the supervision and guidance of Career Technology Center Practical Nursing Program.

    Applications

       Classes are admitted in March and November/December of even years and August of odd years. Application forms will be sent on request. An entrance exam will be scheduled after the completed application form is returned with the testing fee. Information sessions are held following the exam to review results, transcripts and references. It is suggested that interested applicants apply at least 3-6 months in advance of the class they wish to enter.

       Practical nursing is one of the most rewarding careers open to people. Employment opportunities exist in health care institutions and agencies, in clinics, in physician's offices, industry, and in home health. 100% of graduates surveyed a year after graduation were employed.
