Nontraditional Careers
The term Nontraditional Careers refers to jobs that have been traditionally filled by one gender. The US Department of Labor defines nontraditional careers as occupations for which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25% of the individuals employed in each such occupation. For example, in 2005, women represented only 1.8% of the total persons employed as automobile mechanics. Other examples are males in nursing & childcare and females in technologies & construction. Individuals that choose a nontraditional career may face some potential barriers but if they can successfully address these barriers, they may experience financial advantages over the opposite gender. At CTCLC, we support student’s participation in nontraditional programs and encourage an interest in nontraditional careers.
