December Student of the Month: Sponsored by Fastenal
Alena Phillips, a junior from Carbondale Area High School, has been nominated December Student of the Month by her Child Care & Development Instructor, Mrs. Kristine Lenceski. “Alena is known for being hardworking, determined, caring, patient, very respectful, and focused on her goals. Her compassionate and caring demeanor will earn her a spot in any child care career pathway when it comes to working with children and forming that initial bond of trust. She helps out in a preschool classroom in her spare time and enjoys working in the field as she hopes to continue to do so after college graduation”, stated Mrs. Lenceski. While in the Child Care & Development program, Alena has obtained her OSHA10, Mandated and Permissive Reporting PA certification, and 11 employability skills through Career Safe. She is currently taking part in the Keystone College pre-apprenticeship early childhood education program and has obtained college credit.
Alena is the daughter of Tammy and Wayne Phillips. Alena strives to maintain high grades at both Carbondale and CTCLC. Alena says she came to CTCLC to pursue her career. “I chose to come to CTC to gain more opportunities and further my knowledge of the career path I want to pursue”, stated Alena.
At Carbondale, Alena has been on the honor roll since 7th grade and is now a member of the National Honor Society. Alena is also a part of Carbondale’s Spanish club, science & technology club, and was also on the reading competition team. She enjoys baton twirling and has been doing so since she was 4 years old.
Although only a junior, upon graduation, Alena plans to pursue a degree to become a Child Life Specialist.

Darrell Smith, a sophomore from Forest City High School, has been nominated December Student of the Month by his Carpentry Instructor, Mr. Shane Malicky. “Darrell is a model student for the Carpentry program. He has good attendance, good grades and strives to do his best with all tasks presented to him in the program. Darrell can be seen on a daily basis lending a helping hand to his classmates that may be struggling to complete a task in the shop”, stated Mr. Malicky. Darrell has completed 4 American Ladder Safety training certifications and is at the top of his class with an A average.
Darrell is the son of Katherine and Darrell Smith. “I chose to come to CTC so that I can take over the family carpentry business if I want to ”, stated Darrell. Darrell has been on the Honor Roll at Forest City since 7th grade and was selected as student of the month in middle school.
At Forest City Regional HS, Darrell is a member of the Forest City volleyball team, a member of the Forest City Fishing Club, student council and volunteers with his sister's cheer team. He enjoys spending time outdoors and hunting.
Although only a sophomore, upon graduation, Darrell would like to take over the family business or go to college for an architectural design career.

Carl Boone, a junior from Dunmore High School, has been nominated December Student of the Month by his Health Occupations Instructor- Nursing Assistant, Mrs. Jen Savo. “Carl is a kind, generous and intelligent young man. He is an initiator, problem-solver, and leader. I see him going far in the healthcare field”, stated Mrs. Savo. Carl has completed industry skills including infection control (handwashing, PPE, and sterile gloves), completed height weight and temperature skills, and obtained his Mandated Reporting certification. He is currently working on obtaining his OSHA 10 certification.
Carl is the son of Danielle Boone. He came to CTC to further his medical knowledge and get a head start in the medical field. “It was a great opportunity to get certifications and Health Occupations provides good job security”, stated Carl. He has maintained high grades throughout his time at CTCLC.
At Dunmore, Carl has been on the Honor Roll the past two years in a row. At CTCLC, Carl has been an active member of the Student Ambassador program, assisting with multiple Fall tour groups for the prospective 9th-grade students. In his spare time, Carl likes to relax, eat good food and hang out with friends.
After graduation, Carl plans to attend a 4-year college, studying premedial science. After that, he would like to go through the additional education/ degree program specializing in general surgery or OB-GYN.
