Childcare workers care for and nurture children of all ages in a variety of settings. Students in this course learn how to play an important role in a child’s development by attending to a child’s basic needs, organizing activities, and assisting in the development of their emotional, intellectual and social well-being. The physical environment, the ability to work well with all types of children, learning about adaptability, and patience are a few things you will study when you become part of the Child Care and Development program at the CTCLC. This program offers students the opportunity to learn skills needed to work in early childhood facilities, Head Start programs, and other child-centered occupations, as well as helping to build foundational skills for a career in elementary education. The course is designed to assist students in preparation for the CDA credential assessment. This course includes the study of developmentally appropriate practices and programs, theoretical and historical perspectives, ethical and professional responsibilities, and current issues. Students will study the child, family, community, and schools and the influence these areas have in growth and development.
Topics of Study:
Follow safety practices for working with young children. Establish boundaries, study routines, and provide guidance for young children. Learn about early learning center designs and how to choose the appropriate equipment. Learn about the developmental areas of young children’s growth process. Create learning activities for young children. Interact with young children in an “on-site” Head Start. Train in First Aid, CPR, and Fire Safety.
All students are required by DPW (Department of Public Welfare) to obtain the following information and clearances to participate in activities with children:
Annual health appraisal or physical Mantoux test for tuberculosis or chest x-ray Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Pennsylvania State Police Criminal History Check
